Cost of Studying Abroad for Indian Students in 2027

The cost of studying abroad for an Indian student in 2027 ranges from about ₹13–15 lakh a year at a public university in Germany or France to well over ₹60 lakh at a private US university. Most programmes in the UK, Canada, Australia and Ireland cost ₹30–50 lakh for the first year. Those figures already include tuition, the minimum living funds each visa office asks you to show, and the visa fees.
This guide builds the numbers from official visa requirements where they exist, not from rough averages. Every figure is converted to INR at October 2026 exchange rates. To plug in your own course and city, try MetaApply study abroad budget calculator alongside this page.
What the Cost of Studying Abroad Actually Includes
Tuition is the number universities advertise, but it is rarely more than half the bill. A realistic first-year budget has four parts:
- Tuition: The fee on your offer letter. It changes with country, course and university type, and many universities raise it every year.
- Living costs: Rent, food, transport and day-to-day spending. Most countries publish a minimum you must show for the visa, which is the safest floor to plan with.
- Visa and health fees: Application fees, plus compulsory health cover such as the UK's Immigration Health Surcharge.
- One-time costs: Flights, a rental deposit, a laptop and winter clothing. Budget ₹1.5 lakh to ₹3 lakh for these. A common concern we hear from parents is that the total keeps moving after the offer arrives. Usually that's because the plan was built on tuition alone. Starting from the visa office's living-cost minimum avoids most of those surprises.

Country Notes: Where the Numbers Come From
UK
The UK government sets the living-cost figure at £1,171 a month outside London and £1,529 in London, for up to nine months. That's on top of your first-year tuition, as shown on the UK government's Student visa money page. Most UK master's degrees last one year, which keeps the total cost lower than a two-year degree elsewhere. University guidance indicates these monthly figures rise from 30 November 2026, so recheck before you apply.
Canada
Canada's study permit requires CAD 23,448 for living costs for applications from 1 September 2026, plus tuition and travel. Our guide to Canada study visa processing time covers the fees and current timelines.
USA
The US has no single living-cost minimum. Instead, each university's I-20 shows its own estimate, and you must prove funds to match it. Fees include the USD 185 visa application fee and the USD 350 SEVIS fee. A USD 250 visa integrity fee is also being charged at visa issuance.
Australia
Australia asks students to show AUD 29,710 a year for living costs, a figure in place since May 2024. The student visa application charge rose to AUD 2,000 from July 2025.
Germany and France
Germany's public universities mostly charge no tuition, though you'll pay a semester contribution and, in Baden-Württemberg, a non-EU tuition fee. The blocked account of €11,904 for 2026 is released to you at €992 a month. France charges non-EU students €2,902 a year for a bachelor's and €3,950 for a master's at public universities in 2026-27, according to Service-Public. From 1 August 2026, Campus France India lists €877.50 a month as the minimum funds for a student visa.
Ireland
Ireland requires access to at least €10,000 for each year of study. That's lower than most English-speaking destinations, but Dublin rents often push real spending well above it.
How Much Does It Cost to Study Abroad from India Overall?
Pulling the table together gives three rough bands for a first year:
- ₹13 lakh to ₹15 lakh: Public universities in Germany or France, where tuition is low and the main cost is proving living funds.
- ₹30 lakh to ₹50 lakh: Most one-year UK master's degrees and most programmes in Canada, Australia and Ireland.
- ₹50 lakh and above: Private US universities, MBAs and expensive cities such as London, Sydney or New York.
For a two-year degree, the second year usually costs a little less, because flights, deposits and visa fees aren't repeated. Plan for tuition increases and a currency buffer, though.
Ways to Lower the Cost of Studying Abroad
You can cut the total without changing your destination:
- Apply for scholarships early. Even partial awards add up over two years. Start with our list of fully funded scholarships for Indian students.
- Choose a public university where one is a real option. In Germany and France the gap between public and private is large enough to change your budget by ₹10 lakh or more.
- Pick a smaller city. The UK's London figure is 30% higher than the rest of the country, and the same gap shows up in rents elsewhere.
- Treat part-time work as a bonus, not a budget line. Student visas allow limited work hours during term, and wages help with day-to-day spending. Visa officers won't count expected earnings as proof of funds, though, and first jobs often take a few months to find.
- Compare loans properly. Look at the interest rate, the moratorium period and the processing fees together. MetaFinance helps families compare education loan offers from partner lenders.
