If you're planning an MBA or a master's abroad, the GRE vs GMAT question shows up early. Both tests are accepted by most business schools, both cost roughly ₹25,000 per attempt in India, and both scores stay valid for five years. The real difference between GRE and GMAT lies in what each exam rewards, which programmes accept it, and how comfortable you are with its question style. Using the latest 2026 information from ETS and GMAC, this guide compares format, fees, difficulty and MBA acceptance so you can pick the test that fits your profile, not the one your friends took.

If you want a second opinion early, MetaApply's GRE and GMAT test prep team can map the right exam to your target schools.

What Is GMAT and GRE? A Quick Primer

The GRE General Test is conducted by ETS (Educational Testing Service). It is used for admission to a wide range of graduate programmes, including MS, MA, PhD, public policy, law and, increasingly, the MBA. It tests verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning and analytical writing. Our complete guide to the GRE exam covers eligibility and registration in detail.

The GMAT is conducted by GMAC (Graduate Management Admission Council) and is built for business school admissions: MBA, Master in Management (MiM), Master of Finance, Business Analytics and similar degrees. The current version, earlier branded as the GMAT Focus Edition, tests quantitative reasoning, verbal reasoning and data insights. Read our GMAT exam guide for the full picture.

Put simply, in the GRE GMAT exam choice, the GRE is a general graduate test that business schools also accept, while the GMAT is a business school test that few non-business programmes ask for.

A few of these GRE GMAT difference points matter more on test day than on paper.

Sections and Question Style

The GRE has two Verbal sections with 27 questions in total, split between reading comprehension, text completion and sentence equivalence. Those last two formats lean heavily on vocabulary. Quant also has 27 questions across arithmetic, algebra, geometry and data analysis, and you get an on-screen calculator. The test ends with a single 30-minute Issue essay.

The GMAT has 64 questions in three 45-minute sections. Quant (21 questions) covers arithmetic and algebra only, with no geometry and no calculator. Verbal (23 questions) is built on critical reasoning and reading comprehension, with no vocabulary questions in isolation. Data Insights (20 questions) mixes data sufficiency, table analysis, graphics interpretation, multi-source reasoning and two-part analysis, and this is the only section where a calculator is allowed. You also choose the order of the three sections.

Navigation and Adaptivity

On the GRE, you can skip, flag and revisit questions, changing answers freely within a section, and your first Verbal and Quant sections set the difficulty of the second. The GMAT adapts after every single answer, lets you bookmark questions and change up to three answers per section, and penalises questions left unanswered. Students who like to park a hard question and return later usually find the GRE format more forgiving.

GMAT vs GRE: Which Is Easier?

Neither test is objectively harder, so the useful version of "which is easier GMAT or GRE" is: which one is easier for you? GMAT vs GRE difficulty splits along three lines.
  • Quant: GMAT Quant is generally tougher at the higher end. There's no calculator, the word problems are logic-heavy, and Data Insights adds data sufficiency, which trips up many first-timers.
  • Verbal: GRE Verbal is harder for many Indian students because of advanced vocabulary. GMAT Verbal rewards structured reasoning, which engineers and commerce graduates often pick up faster.
  • Data skills: Data Insights is unique to the GMAT. If you read charts and tables at work every day, this section can become a strength.

Is GRE Easier Than GMAT for You?

The GRE may suit you if you read widely, can build vocabulary steadily over two to three months, prefer having a calculator, and want the freedom to move around within a section. It also suits you if you're still deciding between an MBA and an MS.

When the GMAT Is the Better Fit

The GMAT may suit you if your mental maths and logic are sharp, you work with data (analysts, consultants, chartered accountants often fit here), you dislike memorising word lists, and you're applying only to business programmes.

GMAT vs GRE for MBA: Do Business Schools Prefer One?

The question students ask us most, which is better GRE or GMAT for an MBA, has shifted a lot in recent years. According to ETS, 92% of business schools now accept the GRE alongside the GMAT. ETS also reports that for the Class of 2027, 44% of Harvard Business School's incoming class, 42% at Chicago Booth and 44% at Stanford GSB submitted GRE scores. These are the test maker's own figures, but schools' class profiles broadly support the trend.

That said, the GMAT is still the default business school test. Some MiM, Master of Finance and specialised business programmes, including several in Europe and India, either prefer the GMAT or accept only the GMAT. Students heading into consulting or banking also tell us some recruiters ask for test scores and think in GMAT terms.

Here is a simple way to settle GMAT vs GRE for MBA plans:

  • Applying only to MBA or business master's programmes with a strong quant profile: the GMAT is usually the safer default.
  • Undecided between an MBA and an MS, MiM or policy degree: the GRE keeps more doors open with one score.
  • Targeting a mix of European programmes: check each school, since policies vary more across Europe. Our guide to MBA programmes in Europe for Indian students covers the typical entry requirements.

GRE to GMAT: Can You Convert Your Score?

Many students search "GRE to GMAT" hoping for a clean conversion chart. The honest answer is that no official one exists for the current GMAT. ETS states on its own comparison page that it does not publish a GRE and GMAT score conversion table, and GMAC advises against using conversion tools, arguing that the two tests measure different things and that older tools cannot account for Data Insights. Most online charts are stitched together from retired test versions, so treat them as rough guesses.

A better approach is to compare your GRE Verbal and Quant scores against the median GRE scores in each school's class profile. Section balance matters too. A lopsided score, for example very high Verbal with average Quant, can raise questions for quant-heavy MBA programmes even when the total looks competitive.

GRE vs GMAT Cost for Indian Students

The GRE General Test costs ₹25,522 in India, according to the ETS India fee page, following ETS's fee revision effective 1 August 2026. Rescheduling costs ₹5,650, and each score report beyond the four free ones cost ₹4,150.

The GMAT costs USD 275 at a test centre and USD 300 online, charged in dollars and converted at checkout. That works out to roughly ₹24,000 to ₹27,000 depending on the exchange rate and applicable taxes. Rescheduling starts at USD 55 to 60 if you move more than 60 days ahead and rises closer to the test date, while extra score reports cost USD 35 each. ETS also notes that some business schools now ask GMAT takers for a separate GMAC writing assessment costing USD 30.

For most families the fee gap is small. What matters more is budgeting for a realistic two attempts plus preparation, and remembering that a stronger score can qualify you for merit scholarships worth several lakh rupees. You can map total costs using the MetaApply Budget, and if you'll be funding the degree with a loan, MetaFinance can help compare education loan options from partner lenders.

GMAT or GRE: How to Decide in Four Steps

Work through these steps in order.
  1. List your programmes and check each test policy on the official admissions page, not on forums or aggregator sites.
  2. Take one timed official practice test for each exam within the same week. ETS offers free POWERPREP tests for the GRE, and GMAC offers free official practice exams on mba.com.
  3. Compare percentiles, not raw scores. A 160 on GRE Quant and an 80 on GMAT Quant cannot be compared directly, but percentiles give you a fair read on where you stand.
  4. Match the test to your timeline. If your deadline is close, pick the test where your diagnostic was stronger, since switching mid-prep costs more time than most students expect.
