IELTS exam registration in India works differently in 2026 than it did a year ago. The standard test fee has gone up to ₹19,000, the old fully paper-based test has been discontinued, and a new format called IELTS Writing on Paper went live on 1 September 2026. If you're following a 2025 guide, its fee, test formats and date pattern are likely out of date.

This guide covers everything you need to book: the three ways to register, the documents you'll be asked for, current IELTS registration fees, how test dates work now, and what it costs to reschedule or cancel. Haven't fixed your target band yet? Explore IELTS coaching with MetaApply before you lock in a date.

Quick answer: How do I complete IELTS exam registration in India?

You can register online through the official IELTS booking portal for India, in person at an authorised IELTS branch or registration partner, or by courier. Choose IELTS Academic or General Training, pick IELTS on Computer or IELTS Writing on Paper, select your city and slot, enter your details exactly as they appear on passport, and pay ₹19,000 (₹19,250 for IELTS for UKVI). Slots run up to three times a day, seven days a week, and results typically arrive within 1 to 2 days.

IELTS Registration in India: What Changed in 2026

Three changes affect anyone booking now. The table below compares what most older guides describe with what the official IELTS fee schedule for India shows today. You can read more about the test itself on the official IELTS website.

Detail 2025 Now (October 2026)
Standard test fee ₹18,000 ₹19,000 (from 1 April 2026)
Fully paper-based IELTS Available on fixed dates, about four a month Discontinued
Handwriting option Whole test on paper IELTS Writing on Paper: Listening and Reading on computer, Writing by hand
Result time About 13 days (paper), 1-2 days (computer) Typically 1-2 days for both formats
Transfer (reschedule) fee ₹4,500 ₹4,750

IELTS Writing on Paper exists for students who think better with a pen. You take Listening and Reading on a computer, see the Writing tasks on screen and write your answers on an answer sheet. Speaking stays face to face with an examiner in both formats. The content, scoring and fee are identical, so the choice comes down to whether you type or handwrite faster.

How to Complete IELTS Exam Registration: Step-by-Step

You can book in three ways. Online is quickest, but the offline routes still exist for students who want help or can't pay by card.

Method Payment Options Confirmation Best For
Online via the official booking portal Credit/debit card, net banking Instant, on screen and email Most students
In person at an authorised IELTS branch or registration partner Card, demand draft, bank deposit slip Instant acknowledgement (DD subject to realisation) Students who want staff assistance
By courier Demand draft or bank deposit slip After documents and fee are received Students far from any centre

Method 1: IELTS Online Registration

  1. Open the booking page. Go to the official IELTS booking portal for India and select the option to book a test.
  2. Choose your test. Pick IELTS Academic for university admission or General Training for work and migration. If your UK visa route asks for a Secure English Language Test (SELT), book IELTS for UKVI instead.
  3. Choose your format. Select IELTS on Computer or IELTS Writing on Paper. Both cost the same.
  4. Pick a city, date and slot. The calendar shows live seat availability, so have two or three backup dates in mind.
  5. Fill in your details. Enter your name, date of birth and passport number exactly as printed on your passport.
  6. Select your universities. You can send your score electronically to up to five institutions free of charge. Adding them now saves time later.
  7. Pay the fee. Pay by Visa or Mastercard credit/debit card or net banking.
  8. Save your confirmation. You'll see an on-screen confirmation and receive an email. Follow any instruction in it about sending a copy of your passport.

Method 2: Register in Person at an IELTS Branch or Registration Partner

Walk into any authorised IELTS branch or registration partner. Staff can book you online on an office computer, or you can fill in a paper application form and sign the Terms and Conditions there.

Payment can be made by card, by demand draft in favour of the payee named on the official booking portal, or by cash deposit at a designated bank branch using the customised deposit slip. If you pay by demand draft, your seat is confirmed only once the draft clears.

Method 3: Register by Courier

Download or collect the application form, fill it in and sign the Terms and Conditions. Attach a passport photocopy and either a demand draft or the original customer copy of your bank deposit slip, then courier everything to the head office address listed on the official booking portal. Processing starts only when both documents and fee are received, so pick a date with enough buffer.

IELTS Registration Details: Documents You Need

The document list is short, but mistakes here cause most failed or delayed bookings.

  • Valid passport. Your passport is the identity document for IELTS registration in India, and you must carry the same original passport on test day.
  • Passport photocopy. First and last pages, plus any observation pages, for in-person and courier registration.
  • Signed Terms and Conditions. Required for offline bookings.
  • Proof of payment. Card receipt, demand draft or the original bank deposit slip.
  • Parent or guardian ID for minors. If a test taker under 18 doesn't submit a valid parent or guardian identity document by test day, they won't be allowed to sit the test, and 75% of the fee is refunded.

A common concern we hear from parents is whether a passport renewal mid-way causes problems. It does if the passport number changes after booking, so renew first and register second.

IELTS Registration Fees in India 2026

The IELTS registration fee in India is the same in every city, from Delhi and Hyderabad to Pune and Kochi. Here are the current IELTS registration India fees by test type:

IELTS on Computer (Academic or General Training) ₹19,000
IELTS Writing on Paper (Academic or General Training) ₹19,000
IELTS on Computer for UKVI ₹19,250

Other Charges to Budget For

Service IELTS on Computer / Writing on Paper IELTS for UKVI
Transfer (reschedule) ₹4,750 ₹4,850
Enquiry on Results (re-mark) ₹14,250 ₹14,400
Score report beyond the first five institutions ₹350 per institution ₹350 per institution

Put together, a single reschedule takes your total spend from ₹19,000 to ₹23,750, and a re-mark costs almost as much as a fresh attempt. The test fee is one line in a much larger budget, so use our Budget Calculator to map tuition, living costs and test fees together before you shortlist universities.

IELTS Registration Dates: How to Pick Your Slot

There's no single last date for IELTS registration. Each session closes when its seats fill, and computer-delivered slots now run up to three times a day, seven days a week. The challenge isn't finding a date. It's finding one that leaves room for a retake before your application deadline.

Target Intake Have Your Score Ready By Book Your First Attempt
January/February 2027 (UK, Canada, Australia) October-November 2026 Now, ideally for October
May 2027 (selected UK and Canadian programmes) January-February 2027 November-December 2026
September 2027 (UK, Ireland, Europe, Canada) December 2026-March 2027 November 2026-January 2027

Indicative counselling guidance. Each university sets its own English test deadline, and many issue conditional offers before you have a score.

Rescheduling, Cancelling and Retaking Your IELTS

Rescheduling. You can move your date through your candidate account on the booking portal or by submitting a transfer and cancellation form at the centre. A transfer costs ₹4,750 for IELTS on Computer and Writing on Paper, and the new date depends on availability.

Cancelling. For IELTS on Computer and Writing on Paper, cancellations need supporting documents, are approved case by case and carry a 25% deduction, with refunds in 7 to 10 working days. IELTS for UKVI and Life Skills follow a tiered policy: 75% back more than 14 days out, 50% between 2 and 14 days, 25% within 2 days, and nothing on or after test day. Read the current transfer and cancellation policy on the booking portal before you pay, as notice periods can change.

Retaking. There's no limit on attempts, but each one is a fresh booking at the full fee. If only one section let you down, One Skill Retake lets you resit just that section for ₹12,650, subject to eligibility rules.
