The SAT exam syllabus is shorter and far more predictable than most Indian students expect. The digital SAT tests only two areas, Reading and Writing plus Math, across 98 questions in 2 hours 14 minutes. There's no essay, no separate science paper, and nothing you haven't met by Class 10 and early Class 11. A handful of topics are simply tested differently from how CBSE and ICSE textbooks teach them.

This guide answers what is the syllabus of SAT exam in one place: every content domain, the skills inside it, question counts, how the adaptive pattern works, and where Indian students usually drop marks. If you're aiming to study in the USA for the 2027 or 2028 intake, you'll also find the 2026-27 test dates and fees in rupees. Want a clear score target for your university list? What Is the SAT Exam Syllabus?

The College Board, which owns and runs the SAT, doesn't publish a chapter-by-chapter syllabus the way Indian boards do. Instead, it defines content domains, and every question on the test maps to one domain and one specific skill. That's why the smartest way to read the SAT syllabus is as a skills list, not a list of chapters to finish.

Science, history and social studies show up only as passage topics in Reading and Writing, or as real-world contexts in Math word problems. You'll never be asked a physics formula or a date from history. What gets tested is whether you can read closely, edit precisely and apply school math quickly.

SAT Exam Pattern and Syllabus at a Glance

Here's the full structure, taken from the College Board's official SAT structure page:

Section Modules Questions Time Score Range Domains
Reading and Writing 2 modules of 32 minutes 54 64 minutes 200-800 4
Math 2 modules of 35 minutes 44 70 minutes 200-800 4
Total 4 modules + 10-minute break 98 2 hours 14 minutes 400-1600 8

How the Adaptive Modules Work

Each section is split into two equal modules. The first module contains a mix of easy, medium and hard questions. Based on how you do there, your second module is either harder or easier. In practice, this means accuracy in Module 1 matters most, because the top score bands are only reachable through the harder second module.

A few unscored pretest questions are mixed in and aren't labelled, so treat every question as if it counts. You take the test on the College Board's Bluebook app at a test centre, using your own laptop or a borrowed device. For a deeper look at timing strategy and score calculation, see our SAT exam pattern guide.

SAT Reading and Writing Syllabus

Every Reading and Writing question comes with its own short passage of 25 to 150 words, drawn from literature, history and social studies, the humanities and science. Questions testing similar skills are grouped together and run from easiest to hardest within each module, which helps you budget time.

Domain Skills Tested Approx. Share Questions
Craft and structure Words in context, text structure and purpose, cross-text connections ~28% 13-15
Information and Ideas Central ideas and details, inferences, command of evidence (textual and quantitative) ~26% 12-14
Standard English Conventions Boundaries (punctuation and sentence joining); form, structure and sense (agreement, tense, pronouns, modifiers) ~26% 11-15
Expression of Ideas Rhetorical synthesis, transitions ~20% 8-12

What the Questions Actually Look Like

Words in context questions give you a blank in a sentence and ask for the most precise word, so vocabulary depth matters more than rote lists. Command of evidence questions often pair a short claim with a table or bar graph and ask which data point supports it. Cross-text questions give two short passages and ask how one author would respond to the other.

Rhetorical synthesis is the format most Indian students haven't seen before. You get a set of bullet-point notes and must pick the sentence that achieves a stated goal, such as introducing a study to a new audience. Boundaries questions test punctuation rules that school English often skips: when to use a semicolon, a colon or a comma, and how to join clauses correctly.

SAT Math Syllabus

The Math section rewards fluency with Class 9 to 11 concepts, applied quickly and often inside word problems.

Domain Topics Covered Approx. Share Questions
Algebra Linear equations in one and two variables, linear functions, systems of two linear equations, linear inequalities ~35% 13-15
Advanced Math Equivalent expressions; quadratic, exponential, polynomial, rational, radical and absolute value equations and functions; nonlinear systems ~35% 13-15
Problem-Solving and Data Analysis Ratios, rates and units; percentages; one- and two-variable data; scatterplots; probability and conditional probability; sample statistics and margin of error; evaluating study design ~15% 5-7
Geometry and Trigonometry Area and volume; lines, angles and triangles; right triangles and trigonometry; circles ~15% 5-7

Notice that Algebra and Advanced Math together make up roughly 70% of the section. If your prep time is limited, that's where it should go first.

Question Formats, Calculator and Formulas

Most Math questions are multiple choice. The rest are student-produced responses, where you type your own answer with no options to eliminate. A Desmos graphing calculator is built into Bluebook for the entire Math section, and you may also bring an approved calculator of your own. A reference sheet with common geometry formulas is available on screen.

There is no calculus and no matrices. Parents often ask whether SAT Math goes "beyond school". It doesn't. The challenge is speed, careful reading and the American framing of word problems.

SAT Exam Syllabus for Indian Students: How It Maps to CBSE and ICSE

Most of the SAT exam syllabus for Indian students is familiar territory. The table below shows where each area appears in school and where students tend to slip.

SAT Area Where You Learned It Watch Out For
Algebra Class 9-10 linear equations and pairs of linear equations; Class 11 linear inequalities Questions that ask you to build or interpret an equation, not just solve it
Advanced Math Class 8-9 exponents and powers; Class 9-10 polynomials and quadratic equations Exponential growth and decay models, reading function graphs
Problem-Solving and Data Analysis Class 9-11 statistics and probability Margin of error, sampling and study design, which Indian schools rarely cover
Geometry and Trigonometry Class 9-10 triangles, circles, trigonometry and mensuration; Class 11 radians Equation of a circle in standard form, radian measure
Reading and Writing School English grammar and comprehension Semicolon and colon rules, notes-based rhetorical synthesis, timed reading of dense prose

JEE and Olympiad aspirants usually find the Math content comfortable. Where they lose points is careless errors under time pressure and the Reading and Writing section, which rewards precise English rather than general fluency.

What Changed From the Old SAT

If a senior's old prep book is sitting on your shelf, check this before you use it.

Feature Old Paper SAT Digital SAT (Current)
Length About 3 hours, 154 questions 2 hours 14 minutes, 98 questions
Sections Reading, Writing and Language, Math (no-calculator and calculator) Reading and Writing, Math
Passages Long passages with several questions each 25-150 words, one question each
Calculator Not allowed in one Math section Allowed throughout, Desmos built in
Essay Optional, discontinued in 2021 None
Adaptive No Yes, by module

International test centres, including those in India, moved to the digital format in March 2023. Any material still describing an essay, a no-calculator section or 154 questions is out of date.

SAT Dates and Fees for Indian Students (2026-27)

According to the Open Doors 2025 report by IIE, 363,019 Indian students were enrolled in US institutions in 2024-25, the largest group of international students, and the SAT remains a key part of undergraduate applications for many of those universities. Here are the remaining 2026-27 dates, from the College Board test calendar:

Test Date Registration Deadline Late Registration Deadline
7 November 2026 23 October 2026 27 October 2026
5 December 2026 20 November 2026 24 November 2026
6 March 2027 19 February 2027 23 February 2027
1 May 2027 16 April 2027 20 April 2027
5 June 2027 21 May 2027 25 May 2027

Deadlines close at 11:59 pm US Eastern Time, which falls on the following morning in India. The registration fee is USD 68 plus a USD 43 international fee, with GST added at checkout, bringing the total to roughly USD 131 (about ₹11,500-12,500 depending on the exchange rate) [VERIFY GST line at checkout]. Late registration adds USD 38. The test fee is small next to tuition and living costs, so use our Budget Calculator to see the full picture before you shortlist.

How to Prepare the SAT Syllabus: A Realistic Plan

  1. Take a full Bluebook practice test first. Your domain-level results show exactly where marks are leaking.
  2. Rank domains by weight and weakness. Algebra and Advanced Math carry about 70% of Math, so gaps there cost the most.
  3. Fix Standard English Conventions early. It's a finite set of punctuation and grammar rules, and it usually delivers the fastest score jump.
  4. Practise with Desmos, not just by hand. Graphing a system or a quadratic can save a full minute on the right question.
  5. Sit a full adaptive test every week or two in the final month. Review every error by skill, not just by question.

Students with solid Class 10 Maths and good English typically need 8 to 12 weeks of focused work. Those starting from scratch or targeting 1450+ should plan for four to six months.

Frequently Asked Questions

The SAT has two sections. Reading and Writing covers Craft and Structure, Information and Ideas, Standard English Conventions and Expression of Ideas. Math covers Algebra, Advanced Math, Problem-Solving and Data Analysis, and Geometry and Trigonometry. All content is based on school-level English and Maths up to about Class 11.

No. SAT Math stops at algebra, functions, basic statistics, geometry and right-triangle trigonometry. There's no calculus or matrices, so Indian students with strong Class 10 and 11 Maths already know the content.

No. Wrong answers don't reduce your score, so never leave a question blank. If you're unsure, eliminate what you can and make your best guess before time runs out.

Yes. The College Board's Assessment Framework for the Digital SAT Suite is a free PDF that lists every domain and skill. Pair it with Bluebook practice tests and the Student Question Bank, and avoid unofficial PDFs that still mention the essay.

Most Indian students need 8 to 12 weeks if their Class 10 Maths and English are strong. Plan four to six months if you're starting from scratch or aiming for 1450 and above, and schedule two test attempts before your application deadlines.
